Rs 10,000-15,000 Crore Commitment for Social CausesPersonal Loss and Renewed Resolve

Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal has said he will donate 75% of his personal wealth to society and step away from his role as a promoter, choosing instead to serve as a trustee, following a recent interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a post shared on social media, Agarwal said he was invited to attend and speak at the Prime Minister’s Roundtable with Global Energy Leaders on the sidelines of India Energy Week. During the interaction, he informed the Prime Minister about his long-standing commitment to structured philanthropy and his decision to formally transition away from a promoter role.

Last week, I was invited to attend and speak at the ‘PM’s Roundtable with Global Energy Leaders’ on the sidelines of the India Energy Week.

“I have already announced that 75% of my wealth will go back to society. I will cease to be a promoter and will work as a trustee,” Agarwal said, describing the move as a shift toward long-term institution-building and societal impact.

The industrialist has previously spoken about legacy-driven philanthropy, and the latest statement reinforces a more formalised approach to deploying capital for public good, rather than personal ownership and control.

Rs 10,000-15,000 Crore Commitment for Social Causes

Agarwal also revealed that he is considering a large-scale philanthropic initiative of Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 15,000 crore, focused on areas such as education and healthcare. He said the idea was discussed with the Prime Minister, who appreciated the intent behind the initiative.

According to Agarwal, the commitment is aligned with the wishes of his late son and is intended to create lasting social impact rather than short-term interventions.

Personal Loss and Renewed Resolve

The announcement follows a period of profound personal grief for Agarwal. A few days ago, he lost his only son, Agnivesh Agarwal, who died after suffering a cardiac arrest while recovering in a hospital in the United States following a skiing accident.

Agarwal expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for personally conveying condolences and offering words of support. He said the Prime Minister’s advice to remain strong and continue contributing to work of national importance provided emotional strength to him and his wife during an extremely difficult time.

In earlier messages, Agarwal described the loss as the darkest moment of his life, while reaffirming his commitment to a philanthropic vision he shared with his son-focused on ensuring access to food, education, dignity for women and meaningful employment for India’s youth.
