From the sheer consistency of Virat Kohli to the boundary-clearing prowess of Chris Gayle, the T20 World Cup has seen many glittering records over the years.

As the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is set to begin, here are some of the batting records in the shortest format of the game.

Highest Individual Score

Brendon McCullum holds the record of the highest individual score in the history of men’s T20 World Cup. The former New Zealand skipper hit 123 in 58 balls in a New Zealand v Sri Lanka match in Pallekele during the 2012 edition of the World Cup.

Highest Team Total

Sri Lanka powered its way to 260/6 against Kenya in a 2007 T20 World Cup game played in Johannesburg. Nineteen years later, it remains the highest team score in a T20 World Cup game.

Most Runs Scored

Virat Kohli has scored the most runs in the history of T20 World Cup. The batting stalwart amassed 1,292 runs in 35 T20 World Cup matches.

Most Sixes Hit

With 63 sixes from 33 games, Chris Gayle holds the record of the most number of sixes smashed in tournament history.

Most Hundreds

Chris Gayle also has recorded the most number of hundreds by a batter in T20 World Cups. The Universe Boss has two T20 World Cup centuries to his name. His very-first World Cup hundred came in the first-ever T20 World Cup game, which was played between the West Indies and South Africa in Johannesburg in 2007. Gayle hit 117 in 57 balls in that innings.

Nine years later, during the 2016 edition of the World Cup, Gayle hit his second T20 World Cup ton when he powered 100 not out off 48 balls in a group stage match between the West Indies and England in Mumbai.

Most Fifties

Virat Kohli notched 15 scores of fifty and above in T20 World Cups. It is the most number of half-centuries hit by a batter in the tournament’s history.

Most Runs In Single Edition of T20 World Cup

Virat Kohli aggregated 319 runs in six games during the 2013/14 edition of the T20 World Cup, which was held in Bangladesh. With that, he created the record of most runs by a batsman in a single edition of a T20 World Cup.

Most Sixes Hit In An Innings

In his knock of 100 not out off 48 balls vs England, Chris Gayle hit 11 sixes. It is the most number of sixes hit by a batter in a T20 World Cup innings.

Highest Partnership

Alex Hales and Jos Buttler put together an unbeaten opening partnership of 170, during England’s semifinal match against India in Adelaide of the 2022 edition of the World Cup. It is the highest partnership recorded in a t20 World Cup game.

Highest Successful Run Chase

England successfully chased down the target of 230 against South Africa during a 2016 T20 World Cup match in Mumbai. It is the highest successful run-chase by a team in the tournament’s history.
