After witnessing several holidays in the first month of the year, banking services across states and Union Territories are expected to remain open on most days in February, except for a few state-specific holidays as well as closures on the second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays.

In January, banks in India remained shut for around 10-12 days, with the number of holidays varying from one state to another. Significant holidays included New Year, Makar Sankranti, Republic Day and others.

Reserve Bank of India issues the list of bank holidays at the start of every calendar year. Banks in the country remain closed on national holidays and regional festivals, apart from two Saturdays of the month and all Sundays.

The central bank has classified these holidays into three sections: Negotiable Instruments Act, Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.

While services at bank branches remain suspended on these holidays, customers are advised to plan their visits to banks in advance after checking the regional holiday calendar. Customers can continue to avail online banking services that remain fully functional on all days. This means, people can use services like UPI payments, net banking and ATM transactions, among others.
