Apple is reportedly prioritising performance over major design changes for the iPhone 18 lineup, according to a recent leak from the Weibo-based tipster known as Fixed Focus Digital. The leaker claims that the iPhone 18 Pro models — expected to launch in September 2026 — will likely see no significant external redesigns. Apple’s focus is instead on improving performance of the devices with the latest-generation chipsets.
Apple To Prioritise Performance Over Design In iPhone 18 Pro
Fixed Focus Digital reasons that this is largely because the iPhone 17 series was a major sales success. Also, with the iPhone 17 Pro models having introduced a notable redesign (after similar designs two years in a row in the iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro), back-to-back redesigns would be unusual for Apple. This makes it highly probable that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will retain a very similar appearance to the current iPhone 17 Pro devices.
Instead of focusing on appearances, Apple is expected to highlight internal advancements, particularly the A20 and A20 Pro chipsets that will likely be housed the iPhone 18 range. These are anticipated to be Apple’s first processors built on a 2nm manufacturing process (via TSMC). The latest chipsets promise gains in performance (potentially 10-15% faster CPU), power efficiency (up to 30% improvement), battery life, and thermal management compared to the previous generation.
Apple iPhone 18: Other Rumoured Upgrades
Other anticipated upgrades for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max include a smaller Dynamic Island, possibly with under-display Face ID. Apple is also likely to pack its in-house C2 modem for improved connectivity in the Pro range.
On the camera front, a 24MP front-facing camera is expected, along with an upgraded main rear camera with variable aperture for better low-light performance and control. A simplified Camera Control button is also likely.
