Coastal ‘Turtle Trails’ and Wetland Bird-Watching CircuitsBoosting Local Economies Through Eco-Tourism

Adventure tourism received a major uplift in the Union Budget 2026-27, with the government announcing a comprehensive plan to develop new hiking, trekking, coastal and wildlife trails across the country. The Finance Minister highlighted that India has the potential to offer world class ecological adventure experiences, and the new initiatives aim to tap into this fast growing sector.

As part of the expansion, the Budget outlines the development of ecologically sustainable mountain trails across key high altitude regions like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir. These regions, already popular among trekkers, will see upgraded and newly mapped trekking circuits to enhance accessibility and safety.

The plan also extends to the Eastern Ghats (Araku Valley) and Western Ghats (Podhigai Malai), bringing structured hiking experiences to these biodiversity-rich zones.

Coastal ‘Turtle Trails’ and Wetland Bird-Watching Circuits

In a move that blends wildlife conservation with tourism development, the Budget introduces Turtle Trails along important nesting sites across Odisha, Karnataka and Kerala. These experiences aim to bring travellers closer to India’s coastal ecological heritage while ensuring strict sustainability protocols.

Additionally, the government has proposed bird-watching trails along the Pulicat Lake region spanning Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, which is one of India’s richest wetland ecosystems and a key habitat for migratory species. These trails are expected to attract both seasoned birders and new nature enthusiasts.

Boosting Local Economies Through Eco-Tourism

The adventure tourism push is expected to benefiting local communities by generating employment in guiding, homestays, handicrafts, transport, and conservation services.

Officials emphasise that expanded trekking and nature circuits will not only diversify India’s tourism offerings but also promote sustainable, low impact travel, strengthening regional economies.
