US stock market today: The US benchmark index S&P 500 surged to over a 7,000-point record high on Wednesday, 28 January 2026, while the Dow Jones, Nasdaq Composite opened higher ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy outcome.

The United States Federal Reserve (Fed) is set to announce its two-day policy outcome to determine the key benchmark interest rates for the US economy. In the December 2025 policy outcome, the central bank cut its interest rates for the third time by 25 basis points to the range of 3.50% to 3.75%.

At 09:30 am (EDT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.29% to 49,143.74 points, while the S&P 500 gained 0.32% to 7,001.05 points and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.62% to 23,965.03 points.

Trump reacts

As the S&P 500 index hit its fresh record high level during Wednesday’s market session, US President Donald Trump said that “America is back” as the benchmark index hit 7,000 points for the first time.

“The S&P 500 just hit 7,000 for the FIRST TIME EVER. AMERICA IS BACK!!!” said US President Donald Trump in his recent Truth Social post.

MarketWatch data shows that the S&P 500 index hit its record high level at 7,002.28 points, surging 0.33% during Wednesday’s market session, compared to 6,978.60 points at the previous market close.

S&P 500 today

The S&P 500 index was trading 0.16% higher at 6,989.76 points during Wednesday’s market session as of 10:26 am (EDT), compared to 6,978.60 points at the previous stock market close, according to MarketWatch data.

Seagate Technologies Holdings Plc, Intel Corp., F5 Inc., Western Digital Corp., Texas Instruments Inc., Microchip Technology Inc., Sandisk Corp., Elevance Health Inc., Monolithic Power Systems Inc., and First Solar Inc., were among the top gainers on Wednesday.

Amphenol Corp., Textron Inc., Caravana Co., Xylem Inc., Skyworks Solutions Inc., Humana Inc., Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc., Axon Enterprises Inc., and HCA Healthcare were among the top laggards.

Dow Jones today

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was trading 0.09% higher at 49,049.89 points as of 10:39 am (EDT) on Wednesday, compared to 49,003.41 points at the previous market close, MarketWatch data shows.

UnitedHealth Group Inc., Nvidia Corp., Salesforce Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Verizon Communications, Visa Inc., McDonald’s Corp., American Express Corp., Chevron Corp., Walmart Inc., and Travelers Cos. were among the gainers on the Dow on Wednesday.

While other companies like Amgen Inc., Boeing Co., Apple Inc., Honeywell International Inc., Merck & Co., Caterpillar Inc., Coca-Cola Co., JPMorgan and Chase, Amazon, Walt Disney, and Cisco Systems were among others as the laggards on the index.

Nasdaq today

The Nasdaq Composite index was trading 0.18% higher at 23,859.20 points as of 10:46 am (EDT) on Wednesday, compared to 23,817.10 points at the previous market close, Marketwatch data shows.

Tian Ruixiang Holdings Ltd, Envue Medical Inc., Smart Logistics Global Ltd, Murano Global Investments Plc., Brand Engagement Network Inc., Bio-key International Inc., and Lottery.com Inc. were among others as the top gainers in the early trading session.

CalciMedica Inc., Ten Holdings Inc., Global Interactive Technologies Inc., Reliance Global Group Inc., XCF Global Inc., 5E Advanced Materials Inc., and Enveric Biosciences Inc. were among the laggards on Wednesday.
