Stock market update

Indian benchmark indices ended the week on a cautious note, extending their recent correction as elevated crude oil prices, rising global bond yields and persistent geopolitical tensions weighed on investor sentiment.

Market volatility remained high during the week, with the benchmark indices witnessing a recovery at one stage before finishing Friday mostly flat as investors assessed the changing global risk environment.

For the week, the Nifty 50 declined around 0.47% to end at 24,252, while the Sensex fell nearly 0.60% to close at 77,540.83. The broader market performed relatively better, with the SmallCap index rising about 1.2%, while the MidCap index ended marginally lower.

On Friday, the Sensex and Nifty 50 ended largely flat, marking their second consecutive weekly decline. The Sensex gained just 3 points to settle at 77,540.83, while the Nifty 50 advanced 20 points, or 0.08%, to close at 24,252.

“Indian equities ended the week on a softer note, with investor decisions shaped largely by the twin overhang of rising energy costs and firm global yields. Sentiment stayed defensive through much of the week as crude oil pushed past the psychologically important ninety-dollar mark, reviving imported-inflation worries. This backdrop triggered a sharp mid-week dip ahead of US FOMC minutes. Markets, however, clawed back losses towards the close, drawing support from value buying in financials and the underlying resilience of domestic fundamentals,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited.
